Key Points
  • Regular service providers usually get the cost of one visit or about a week’s pay, while crews and occasional helpers get $10 to $50 each.
  • USPS carriers and other federal workers can’t accept cash or cash-like gift cards, and their gifts top out at $20 per occasion.
  • Bankrate found fewer Americans planned holiday tips in 2025, but the median tip held steady at $50 for house cleaners.

Holiday tips are a thank-you to the people who show up for you all year, from the house cleaner to the crew that hauls your trash. The hard part is deciding who makes the list and how much fits your holiday budget.

This chart covers 78 service providers, from nannies and doormen to dog walkers and delivery drivers. You’ll find a suggested amount for each one, the rules that limit what some workers can accept, and a planner that totals your list. Treat every amount as a starting point, and track the total in a budgeting app as you give.

How Much Should You Tip For The Holidays In 2026?

For anyone you see every week or two, a holiday tip equal to the cost of one visit is the standard. Full-time nannies and daily dog walkers usually get about a week’s pay, and crews you rarely see get $10 to $50 per person. These ranges track the Emily Post Institute’s holiday tipping advice, and you can fund them from a high-yield savings account you set up for holiday spending.

Holiday Tipping Rules Of Thumb

Weekly Or Biweekly Service: The cost of one visit, such as one cleaning, one haircut, or one training session.
Full-Time Caregivers: About one week’s pay for a nanny, au pair, or private caregiver, often with a small gift from the family.
Crews And Routes: $10 to $50 per worker for trash, lawn, snow, and building staff you see now and then.
Government Workers: A non-cash gift worth $20 or less, or a card, since many can’t take cash.
Professionals: Doctors, lawyers, and accountants get a card or office treats, not cash.
People You Tip Every Visit: A smaller holiday tip or a card is plenty.

Adjust from there based on how often you use the service, how many years you’ve worked together, and where you live, since big-city tips run higher. If your list runs long, our ways to earn extra cash for Christmas can cover the difference.

Holiday Tipping Chart For 2026: Who To Tip And How Much

The chart below lists 78 people you might thank this season, grouped by where they show up in your life. Each amount is The College Investor’s suggested range, built from Emily Post Institute advice and Bankrate survey data, and you can scale any of them to fit the budget you set.

In-Home Help: Nannies, Sitters, And House Cleaners

People who work inside your home every week sit at the top of most lists, and they usually get the largest tips. Full-time childcare is also where tax rules kick in, and a dependent care FSA through work can help cover the regular cost of that care.

Who Suggested Tip Or Gift Good To Know

House Cleaner (Monthly Or Occasional) Half of one visit, or $20 to $50 Less frequent service earns a smaller thank-you.
Full-Time Nanny One week’s pay, plus a small gift from your child A cash bonus counts as wages for payroll tax.
Au Pair Or Live-In Nanny One to two weeks’ pay, plus a gift Check whether your au pair agency sets any rules.
Regular Babysitter One night’s pay, plus a small gift from your child Bump it up if they work most weekends.

Outdoor And Home Maintenance Crews

Kids, School, And Lessons

Teachers and caregivers get gifts more often than cash, and school rules often set the limit. Private tutors and lesson teachers are different, since you pay them directly, and the average cost of tutoring gives you a baseline for one session.

Apartment And Building Staff

Mail, Packages, And Delivery

Delivery is the category with the most rules, because federal law and company policies limit what drivers can accept. Gig drivers on apps like DoorDash and Instacart are the easy ones, since an in-app tip goes straight to them.

Personal Care, Beauty, And Fitness

Personal care is where the “cost of one visit” rule fits best. Most of these workers are in jobs on the Treasury’s list of jobs eligible for the no tax on tips deduction, so your tip may qualify for that deduction on their return.

Pets

Pet care is personal, and a walker or sitter who sees your animals every week earns a bigger thank-you than an occasional groomer. Many dog walkers book through apps like Rover, so you can add a holiday tip right in the app.

Holiday Tips 2026: Pets

Dog Walker One week’s pay Daily walkers rank near the top.

Healthcare And Eldercare

Agencies, hospitals, and care homes often bar staff from taking cash, so ask before you give. A donation can stand in for a tip, and a gift to a qualified nonprofit can count as a charitable contribution on your taxes.

Regulars Around Town

Your regulars around town are optional, but a December thank-you builds goodwill. If you tip on a card, a cash back credit card returns a little of it, as long as you pay the balance in full.

Work And Business

Work tips and gifts come with tax rules, especially if you own the business. Business owners should handle client gifts and staff bonuses as part of their year-end business checklist.

Source: The College Investor, Emily Post Institute, Bankrate.

Public Workers

Many city, state, and federal workers can’t accept cash at all. When the rules say no, a card or a donation in their name is the safe choice, and none of it touches the gift tax at these amounts.

Holiday Tips 2026: Public Workers

Trash And Recycling Crew (Private Hauler) $10 to $30 per worker Bankrate’s 2025 median was $25.

Who Can’t Accept Cash Tips?

USPS mail carriers, other federal employees, many city workers, and some public school teachers face legal limits on gifts. Several delivery companies also bar drivers from taking cash. A small non-cash gift and a card is the safe move for these workers, and store cards from discount gift card sites stretch your budget.

Who Can’t Take Cash: 2026 Gift Rules
Who The Rule Cash? Give Instead
USPS Mail Carriers Gifts up to $20 per occasion and $50 a year per customer. No cash, checks, or cash-like gift cards. No Cash Snacks, a $20 coffee shop card, warm gloves
Other Federal Employees Same $20 and $50 limits under federal ethics rules. No Cash A card or a small treat
City Workers In NYC And Philadelphia Tips of any value are banned for city employees doing their jobs. No Tips A thank-you note or a call to the department
Public School Teachers Depends on state and district. Massachusetts allows class gifts up to $150 a year. Check Rules A class gift or classroom supplies
UPS Drivers No published customer policy. Drivers are told to decline cash. Gifts Okay Snacks, drinks, or a small gift
FedEx Drivers No cash or gift cards. Gifts up to $75 a year. Gifts Okay Snacks or a small gift
Amazon Drivers No published tip limit. Holiday Thank My Driver promotions have paid $5 per thank-you. Use The App Thank My Driver, or a porch snack bin
Agency Caregivers And Care Homes Set by the agency or facility. Many ban cash. Check Rules A group food tray or a donation

USPS Mail Carrier Gift Rules

Postal workers follow the same federal ethics rule as other executive branch employees. A carrier can accept a gift worth $20 or less per occasion, up to $50 a year from one customer. Cash, checks, and Visa or Mastercard gift cards are off limits in any amount. A $20 coffee shop or restaurant card is fine, and you can often buy one below face value through gift card resale sites.

UPS, FedEx, And Amazon Driver Rules

FedEx drivers can’t take cash or gift cards, but they can accept gifts worth up to $75 a year. UPS drivers are told to decline cash, McClatchy News reported, so snacks or a small gift work better. Amazon’s Thank My Driver promotion paid drivers $5 per thank-you in December 2025, at no cost to customers. Gig drivers on food delivery apps get tips in the app instead.

City Workers And Public School Teachers

New York City’s Conflicts of Interest Board (PDF File) says public servants may not take a tip of any value for doing their jobs. Philadelphia (PDF File) tells its sanitation crews to turn down cash tips from residents. A donation to a local food bank in the crew’s name breaks no rules, and it can count as a charitable contribution.

Teacher rules vary by state. The Massachusetts State Ethics Commission allows a class gift of up to $150 per school year, plus individual gifts under $50 from families who didn’t chip in. A pooled class gift card is the easiest way to stay inside limits like these, and you can buy one at a discount through discount gift card sites.

How Much Do Americans Actually Tip At The Holidays?

Fewer people planned holiday tips in 2025, but those who tipped gave about the same as before. The share planning to tip fell for every provider in Bankrate’s 2025 survey. Childcare saw the biggest drop, from 55% to 47%, and tight budgets show up elsewhere too, with credit card debt at $1.18 trillion in 2025.

How Americans Tipped In 2025
Provider Plan To Tip 2025 Plan To Tip 2024 Median Tip 2025 Median Tip 2024
House Cleaner 56% 57% $50 $50
Childcare Provider 47% 55% $48 $50
Teacher 47% 53% $25 $25
Lawn, Garden, Or Snow Crew 37% 41% $50 $30
Mail Carrier 27% 31% $20 $20
Trash And Recycling Collector 21% 26% $25 $20
Source: Bankrate Holiday Tipping Survey, 2025. Share is among people who use each service. The College Investor.

Median tips held at $50 for house cleaners, $25 for teachers, and $20 for mail carriers, while lawn and snow crews jumped from $30 to $50. Younger adults feel the most pressure, and Bankrate found 44% of Gen Z and 42% of millennials feel obligated to tip. If that pressure stresses you out, a short no-buy challenge in November can free up cash for the people who matter most.

How To Tip On A Tight Budget

Start with the people you see most, like your sitter and house cleaner. Then cut amounts in half before you cut anyone from the list, and use cards, homemade treats, and group gifts for the rest. Plan the total the same way you’d build any budget, with a number first and names second.

A Sample Tip List At Two Budgets

A typical suburban family with a biweekly cleaner, a sitter, two school-age kids, a dog walker, and a lawn crew can easily spend $585 following full etiquette. The tight budget version below thanks every person on that list for $275, a 53% cut. Run your own numbers in the planner above, then track them in a budgeting app.

Sample Holiday Tip List: $585 Vs. $275
Who Full Etiquette Amount Tight Budget Version
Biweekly House Cleaner $160 (one visit) $80 plus a card
Regular Babysitter $80 (one night) $40 plus a kid-made card
Two K-12 Teachers $50 $20 toward two class gifts
USPS Mail Carrier $20 gift Homemade cookies
Trash Crew, Two Workers (Private Hauler) $40 $20
Hairstylist $75 (one visit) $35
Dog Walker $100 (one week) $50
Lawn Crew, Two Workers $60 $30
Total $585 $275

Pay For Holiday Tips Without Debt

Set aside a small amount each month in a separate savings bucket, and December tips stop feeling like a surprise. Pulling the cash out ahead of time works like the envelope challenge, since you can only hand out what’s in the envelope.

Skip pay-later apps for tips and gifts, because buy now, pay later plans can now affect your credit score. If holiday spending already sits on a card you can’t pay off, look at legitimate credit card debt relief before adding more.

Holiday Tipping For College Students

College students on a tight budget can skip cash entirely. A signed card for the dining hall crew or a group gift from your floor for the building custodian goes a long way. Our ways to save money in college can help you find room for small gifts.

Many students sit on the other side of the tip jar, too. Babysitting, dog walking, and delivery all show up on our list of side hustles for college students, and holiday tips can make December one of the better months for those jobs.

Cash, Gift Card, Or Gift: What Should You Give?

Cash is the best tip for most service workers, because it’s flexible and arrives right when holiday bills hit. Give a store-specific gift card to workers who can’t take cash, and give a gift to professionals and teachers. Crisp bills in a card with a handwritten note beat cash handed over at the door, and store cards from discount gift card sites stretch your money.

Payment apps are fine for nannies, sitters, and dog walkers you already pay that way. Send the tip from your personal account with a note so it reads as a holiday thank-you. Our comparison of Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, and PayPal can help if you’re choosing one. Workers paid through a business profile may see those payments on a Form 1099-K.

Gift Ideas Within The USPS Limit

A $20 coffee or restaurant card, a box of baked goods, warm gloves, or a reusable water bottle all fit the USPS limit and most delivery company policies. For city workers who can’t accept anything, a thank-you note to their department gets noticed.

When Should You Give Holiday Tips?

Give holiday tips in the first two weeks of December, or at the last visit before the holiday. Tipping early means workers have the money for their own holiday spending. Buying gift cards and small gifts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales helps your budget too.

For crews you never see, like trash collectors, hand the envelope over in person or tape a clearly labeled card to the bin the morning of pickup. Missed the window? A New Year’s card with a tip is still welcome, and a tip in January beats skipping it.

Are Holiday Tips And Gifts Taxable?

For most givers, holiday tips aren’t deductible and won’t trigger any tax. Household employers and business owners are the exceptions. Personal gifts stay well under the $19,000 annual gift tax exclusion for 2026, so there’s no paperwork for the giver. The workers who receive tips owe income tax on them.

Holiday Bonuses For A Nanny Or Housekeeper

A cash holiday bonus to a household employee counts as cash wages under IRS Publication 926. For 2026, Social Security and Medicare taxes apply once you pay one household employee $3,000 or more in cash wages. Once you cross that line, the bonus counts toward the wages you report on their Form W-2, while non-cash gifts like a sweater or a meal don’t count as cash wages.

Holiday Gifts From A Business

A business can deduct only $25 per client per year for gifts under IRS Publication 463. Cash and gift cards to employees count as taxable wages under IRS Publication 15-B, no matter the amount. Run both through payroll and your books as part of your year-end business checklist.

For Workers Who Receive Holiday Tips

Tips are taxable income, but the new no tax on tips deduction lets eligible workers deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips for 2025 through 2028. Nannies, babysitters, house cleaners, pet sitters, hairstylists, trainers, and delivery workers are among the jobs eligible for the deduction, which phases out above $150,000 of income for single filers and $300,000 for joint filers.

A voluntary holiday tip from a customer may count as a qualified tip, while a bonus your employer pays through payroll is wages, not a tip. Self-employed workers still owe self-employment tax on tip income, so check with a tax pro before you claim it.

What To Write In A Holiday Tip Card

Keep the note short, name something specific they did this year, and sign it from the whole household. A specific line means more than a long one, and kids can sign the card or chip in from their own debit card for kids. Here are lines you can borrow.

“Thank you for keeping our home running all year. We notice every detail, and we’re grateful.”For A House Cleaner
“The kids talk about you all week. Thank you for being someone they trust.”For A Nanny Or Sitter
“Rain, snow, and a mountain of packages, and you never missed a day. Happy holidays.”For A Mail Carrier
“Thank you for everything you did for our family this year. Enjoy a coffee on us.”For A Teacher
“Our dog thinks you hung the moon. So do we.”For A Dog Walker

If you can’t give a tip this year, the card on its own is still a real thank-you. Pair it with homemade treats. Save your cash for people you pay directly, like a dog walker you booked through Rover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Tip My Mail Carrier For Christmas?

You can’t give a USPS carrier cash or a cash-like gift card. You can give a gift worth $20 or less, like snacks or a coffee shop card, up to $50 a year from one customer. Store cards are easy to find through discount gift card sites.

How Much Do You Tip A House Cleaner For The Holidays?

The standard is the cost of one visit for a weekly or biweekly cleaner. Bankrate’s 2025 survey found a median holiday tip of $50, so many people give less than a full visit. Half a visit plus a card is fine on a tight budget.

Is It Rude Not To Tip For The Holidays?

No. Holiday tips are a thank-you, not a bill, and a handwritten card is a real gesture when money is tight. If you tip every visit year-round, a smaller holiday tip or card is plenty. Your emergency fund should come first.

Do You Tip Teachers For The Holidays?

Teachers usually get a gift or gift card, not cash. Bankrate found a $25 median in 2025, and some states cap gifts to public school teachers. A class gift from several families often works best, and discount gift card sites stretch the pool.

How Much Should I Give My Nanny For Christmas?

One week’s pay is standard for a full-time nanny, often with a small gift from your child. A cash bonus counts as wages for household payroll taxes, so add it to the nanny’s Form W-2 total.

Do You Tip Your Trash Collector At Christmas?

Many people give $10 to $30 per worker, and Bankrate’s 2025 median was $25. City sanitation workers in places like New York City and Philadelphia can’t accept tips, so check whether your hauler is public or private first.

Can I Tip My Amazon Or UPS Driver?

Amazon’s Thank My Driver promotion paid drivers $5 per thank-you during the 2025 holidays, at no cost to customers. UPS drivers are told to decline cash, so snacks or a small gift work better. App-based drivers on Uber Eats can get tips right in the app.

What Can I Give Instead Of A Cash Tip?

Store gift cards, baked goods, warm accessories, or a handwritten card all work. For care homes and agencies that ban cash, a group food tray is the safe choice. A donation to the organization works too, and it can count as a charitable contribution.
