- Where’s My Refund shows three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Most e-filed returns with direct deposit get a refund within 21 days, but refunds with the EITC or ACTC can’t go out before mid-February 2027.
- You can’t simply choose a paper check on your return anymore. A return without valid bank information gets frozen and a CP53E notice. You then have 30 days to add a bank account or request a paper check waiver, or you wait about 6 weeks for a check.
- A message like “processing delayed beyond the normal timeframe” usually means a manual review, not a denial. More than 14 million returns were suspended for review during the 2026 filing season.
Where’s My Refund is the first place most filers look after they file. Taxpayers checked it about 346 million times during the 2026 filing season, according to the National Taxpayer Advocate’s mid-year report. Our IRS tax refund calendar covers when refunds usually arrive.
We’ve fielded reader questions about refund status messages every tax season for over a decade. Most of them come down to the same dozen messages, codes and letters. This page explains each one for the 2027 filing season (when you’ll file your 2026 tax return). You’ll find more help on deadlines and forms in our tax center.
Two things are different this year. Getting a paper refund check now takes an extra step on your part, and the IRS2Go app is now simply called the IRS app. Use the refund status decoder below to see what your message means and which dates matter for your return. If you haven’t filed yet, our ranking of the best tax software can help you pick a filing option.

What’s Different About IRS Refunds In 2027?
The 2027 filing season covers tax year 2026 returns, which are due Thursday, April 15, 2027. The IRS hasn’t announced when it will start accepting returns. It opened the 2026 season on January 26, according to the IRS filing season announcement, and we’ll update our refund schedule once the 2027 date is set.
Paper refund checks are the biggest change. Executive Order 14247 ended them as the default starting September 30, 2025, and Form 8888 no longer offers a paper check option. Leaving your bank information blank doesn’t get you a check anymore. It gets your refund frozen until you act. The IRS issued about 2.2 million paper check refunds early in the 2026 season, down from about 8.4 million over the same stretch of 2025, according to the Taxpayer Advocate’s FY 2027 objectives report (PDF File). The section on getting a paper check in 2027 walks through your options, and our breakdown of how to get your tax refund without a bank account covers prepaid cards.
The app changed too. The IRS replaced IRS2Go with the IRS app on September 25, 2026, and refund status still works without signing in, according to the IRS app FAQ. Signed-in users can also see amended return status and some notices. Our tax center tracks other filing season changes as the IRS announces them.
Staffing is the wild card. Paper check refunds averaged 36 days in 2026, up from 13 days in 2025, according to a GAO review of the 2026 filing season. Submission processing staff fell 18% from the year before. E-filed returns with direct deposit held up better, with nine in 10 issued within 21 days. Our list of reasons your tax return could be delayed covers the other common holdups.

How Do You Check Your IRS Refund Status?
Use Where’s My Refund on IRS.gov or the IRS app. You need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return. The tool covers the current tax year and the two years before it. Our tax refund calendar shows how those statuses usually line up with deposit dates.
Timing matters before your first check. Status shows up within 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, 3 or 4 days after you e-file a prior-year return and about 4 weeks after you mail a paper return, according to the IRS. The tool updates once a day, overnight. Checking every hour won’t show anything new, and your IRS account transcript codes follow the same overnight cycle.
You have two other options. Your IRS online account shows refund status plus notices, transcripts and payment history. The automated refund hotline at 800-829-1954 gives the same status the website does. If you used free tax software or a paid program, its “accepted” email only confirms the IRS received the return. It won’t tell you when the refund is coming.
What Does Your Refund Status Mean Right Now?
Enter what you filed and what Where’s My Refund shows. The decoder explains the message and lists your next dates, including when calling the IRS makes sense. It runs in your browser and doesn’t send your information anywhere. For the transcript side of the picture, see our list of IRS transcript codes and WMR reference codes.

Dates are estimates built from published IRS timelines. Where’s My Refund has the only official refund date. The College Investor.
What Do The Where’s My Refund Messages Mean?
Return Received means the IRS has your return and is processing it. Once processing finishes, Refund Approved appears with a deposit or mailing date. The last stage, Refund Sent, means the money left the Treasury and is headed to your bank or mailbox. Most filers see only those three stages, and our refund calendar shows how long each one usually lasts.
Everything else is a detour message. The table below covers the ones readers ask us about most. Some need nothing from you, while others start a clock. The ones tied to student loans, such as a reduced refund, connect to how student loans affect your tax refund.

My Return Was Accepted. When Will It Be Approved?
Most e-filed returns move from accepted to approved within 21 days. Accepted only means the return passed basic checks, such as a valid name and Social Security number and no duplicate filing. Approved means the IRS processed the return as filed and set a refund date. Returns that claim the EITC or ACTC wait longer by law, as our PATH Act refund dates explain.
Does The IRS Deposit Refunds On Weekends?
No. The IRS sends refunds to the Treasury on business days, and banks post deposits on business days. The 21-day estimate counts calendar days, though, because the IRS processes returns seven days a week during filing season. Some banks release a tax refund before the official date, as our list of bank accounts with early direct deposit shows.
Why Does It Show A Deposit Date And Then Say To Call If Not Received By Another Date?
The first date is when the Treasury sends the money. The second date gives your bank time to post it, which can take up to 5 days. Name mismatches cause many missing deposits, since a bank can reject a refund when the account owner doesn’t match the return. Since 2026, most rejected deposits are frozen instead of being reissued as a check. Send the refund to an account in your own name, like one of the best high-yield savings accounts.
How Long Does An IRS Refund Take In 2027?
Most e-filed returns with direct deposit should get a refund within 21 days of acceptance. Paper returns, credits covered by the PATH Act, identity checks and missing bank information all add time. The table below shows the 2027 timelines we expect, based on current IRS rules and how the 2026 season played out. Our IRS refund schedule converts these windows into estimated deposit dates.

| Refund Sent By Check | About 4 weeks by mail | Request a trace after 28 days |
When Will EITC And ACTC Refunds Arrive In 2027?
Not before mid-February 2027. Section 6402(m) of the tax code bars the IRS from issuing a refund that includes the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before February 15. The hold covers the whole refund, not just the credit. February 15, 2027 falls on Presidents Day, so the first releases will come after that holiday. Our PATH Act refund dates will carry the 2027 schedule once the IRS sets it.
In 2026, the IRS said most early filers claiming either credit would see their money around March 2, with Where’s My Refund showing dates by about February 21, according to NATP. Expect a similar pattern in 2027. If you need cash before then, read our take on the pros and cons of tax refund advance loans first.
Does The IRS Pay Interest On A Late Refund?
Yes, after 45 days. Under Section 6611(e) of the tax code, the IRS owes no interest if it refunds you within 45 days of the later of the filing deadline or the date you filed. For a return filed by April 15, 2027, a refund issued after May 30, 2027 earns interest back to April 15. The interest counts as taxable income in the year you get it. The programs in our top tax software rankings ask for it when you file.
What Does “Return Processing Delayed Beyond The Normal Timeframe” Mean?
It means your return left the automated processing stream for a manual review. The full message reads “We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe.” It’s the message readers search for most, and it isn’t a denial. More than 14 million individual returns were suspended for review during the 2026 filing season, according to the Taxpayer Advocate. Over 1 million filers waited past normal processing times, about 5.5 weeks on average. Our list of common tax return delays covers the usual triggers.
Common triggers include refundable credits, income that doesn’t match your W-2s or 1099s, and possible identity issues. The IRS mails a letter when it needs something from you, and many notices also appear in your online account. No letter means the IRS hasn’t asked you for anything yet. Your transcript codes can show whether the IRS has placed a hold on the account.
Don’t file the return again, and don’t send an amended return while the original is in review. Both moves create a second record the IRS has to untangle. Call only after 21 days for an e-filed return or 6 weeks for a paper return. If the delay runs more than 30 days past normal processing, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can step in, which we cover in the section on when to call the IRS. Our tax center has more on IRS letters.
What Do Tax Topic 152, 151 And 203 Mean?
Tax Topic 152 is general refund information and needs no action. Seeing Topic 151 means the IRS changed your return or refund. A Topic 203 reference means part of your refund may have gone to a debt. Each one links to an IRS page, and each one calls for a different response. Our breakdown of WMR reference codes covers the less common codes.
What Does Tax Topic 152 Mean?
Tax Topic 152 is the IRS’s general refund information page. Where’s My Refund shows it to millions of filers while their returns process. It isn’t a sign of a problem, an audit or a delay by itself. Keep checking once a day, and use our tax refund calendar to estimate the date.
What Does Tax Topic 151 Mean?
Tax Topic 151 explains your appeal rights. It usually appears when the IRS adjusted your return or refund, often because of a math error or a credit amount it couldn’t verify. A letter follows that explains the change and your deadline to respond. Compare it with your return or your tax software records before you accept it.
What Does Tax Topic 203 Mean?
Tax Topic 203 covers a reduced refund. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service can apply your refund to past-due child support, state income tax, unemployment debts or federal agency debts through the Treasury Offset Program. You’ll get a notice that names the agency and the amount. Call the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107 to check for a debt. If the debt belongs only to your spouse, Form 8379 can protect your share, and our tax offset definition explains how the process works.
Can Defaulted Student Loans Take Your 2027 Tax Refund?
Not right now, but that could change before refunds go out. The Department of Education paused involuntary collections, including tax refund offsets, on January 16, 2026, as Axios reported. The department told Yahoo Finance on October 29, 2026 that involuntary collections remain paused, though reports say Treasury is preparing to restart them. Our explanation of how student loans affect your tax refund walks through the offset rules.
Borrowers get about 65 days’ notice before a Treasury offset. Only defaulted federal student loans can trigger one. Private student loans can’t take your refund, and federal student loans in deferment, forbearance or repayment are safe. If you’re in default, now is the time to look at student loan rehabilitation or the steps to stop a tax offset for student loan debt.
Why Is My Refund Frozen With A CP53E Notice?
A CP53E notice means the IRS approved your refund but can’t deliver it electronically. The usual cause is a return with no bank information, or a deposit the bank rejected. About 4 million of these notices went out by April 27, 2026, according to the National Taxpayer Advocate. Filers without a checking account can still use the options in our article on tax refunds without a bank account.
You have 30 days from the notice date to add a bank account or select a paper check exception in your IRS online account, according to the IRS CP53E page. The account must be in your name or a joint account you share. IRS employees can’t take bank details over the phone. If you do nothing, the IRS says it will mail a paper check after 6 weeks. A prepaid card or one of the early direct deposit accounts on our list also counts as direct deposit.
You get one chance. The CP53E notice is issued only once, and a second rejected deposit won’t bring another opportunity to fix it, according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. The notice lists an information-only line, 866-325-4066. Scam versions of these notices circulate, so type IRS.gov into your browser and sign in there instead of clicking a link in a text. Our steps on what to do if your identity is stolen help if you already shared bank details.
Can You Still Get A Paper Refund Check In 2027?
Yes, but only if you take action or qualify for an exception. Paper checks stopped being the default for individual refunds after September 30, 2025, according to the IRS questions and answers on Executive Order 14247. You can’t pick a paper check on your return, so a blank bank section now triggers a refund freeze and a CP53E notice. Unless the IRS changes the process before the 2027 season opens, expect the same rules this year. If you want to skip all of this, our list of bank accounts with early direct deposit includes free options.
Once the CP53E arrives, you have three ways to get a paper check. Request a paper check waiver in your IRS online account within 30 days. If you don’t have a bank account or an online account, call 800-829-1040 and ask the representative for a waiver, according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Doing nothing also ends in a check, which the IRS mails after about 6 weeks as long as nothing else on the return needs review. Our article on tax refunds without a bank account covers the electronic options that skip the wait.
A waiver isn’t fast. The IRS generally issued the check about four weeks after a waiver request in 2026, and it had received more than 55,000 requests by May 29, according to the Taxpayer Advocate (PDF File). The CP53E notice also didn’t include the phone number or explain that you could request a waiver by phone, the report found. If you plan to take the check, add about a month to your refund timeline and track it in our IRS refund calendar.

| Path | What You Do | When The Check Comes |
|---|---|---|
| Waiver In Your Online Account | Select a paper check exception within 30 days of the CP53E | About 4 weeks after the request in 2026 |
| Waiver By Phone | Call 800-829-1040 if you have no bank account and no online account | About 4 weeks after the request in 2026 |
| No Response To The CP53E | Nothing | About 6 weeks later |
| Form 4029 Religious Exemption | Nothing extra, the IRS skips the CP53E | About 7 to 10 days in 2026 |
| Return For A Deceased Taxpayer | Nothing extra, the IRS hasn’t changed how these refunds are issued | Normal processing |
Who Qualifies For A Paper Check Exception?
The IRS hasn’t published a full list. It says there are “limited exception conditions,” and its guidance mentions hardship and cases where no electronic option exists. Two groups got automatic treatment in 2026. Filers with a Form 4029 religious exemption on file skipped the CP53E and got checks in about 7 to 10 days, and the IRS says it hasn’t changed how it issues refunds for deceased taxpayers. Everyone else has to request the waiver, so check the tax center for updates before you file.
Could The Paper Check Rules Change For 2027?
Possibly, but nothing is announced. The Taxpayer Advocate is pushing the IRS to let filers request a paper check when they file, instead of waiting for a CP53E. The AICPA asked the IRS to skip the notice for people who qualified for an exception in 2026, as The Tax Adviser reported. Until the IRS acts, the safest plan is direct deposit into an account in your own name, like one of the best high-yield savings accounts.
Why Does Where’s My Refund Say My Information Doesn’t Match?
Usually it’s a typo or it’s too early. The refund amount has to be the exact whole-dollar figure from your return, with no cents. The filing status and tax year have to match too. If you e-filed less than 24 hours ago, or mailed a return less than 4 weeks ago, the IRS may not have a record to match yet. Our refund calendar shows when status usually appears.
What Does Reference Code 9001 Mean?
Code 9001 means someone checked the refund using the secondary Social Security number on a joint return, usually the spouse’s. Checking that way doesn’t affect the refund and isn’t a reason to call. It often happens when one spouse checks status without telling the other, or after a typo. Check again with the primary filer’s number, and see our full write-up on IRS reference number 9001.
Why Did My Progress Bars Disappear?
Missing bars are almost always a website or app glitch, and they say nothing about your refund. Try again later, use the IRS app or sign in to your online account. Where’s My Refund also goes offline for routine maintenance early Monday mornings, roughly midnight to 3 a.m. Eastern. Other codes that show up in the tool are in our list of WMR reference codes.
Does Identity Verification Mean You Had Identity Theft?
No. Two different things get called “verifying your identity,” and neither one proves fraud. When you call the IRS, the representative has to confirm who you are before discussing your account, which is routine for every caller. A letter asking you to verify your return is different. It means the IRS’s fraud filters flagged the return and stopped processing until you confirm you filed it. If someone did use your information, our steps on what to do when your identity is stolen apply.
For phone calls, the IRS Internal Revenue Manual tells representatives to confirm your taxpayer ID number, your name as it appears on the return, your current address and your date of birth. A mismatch on your birth date may mean Social Security has it wrong. In that case, the IRS tells you to contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. A related problem, fraudulent federal student loans in your name, is covered in our article on student loan identity theft.
What Should You Do With A 5071C Letter?
Respond within 30 days. Letter 5071C lets you verify online at idverify.irs.gov or by calling the number on the letter. Once you verify, it may take up to 9 weeks to get your refund, according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Letter 4883C requires a phone call, and Letter 5747C requires an in-person visit. If you didn’t file the return, tell the IRS that instead of verifying it, then follow our steps for an identity theft recovery.
Phone verification is slow to reach. The Taxpayer Protection Program line got about 2.4 million calls in the 2026 filing season, and representatives answered only 19% of them, with a 20-minute average hold, according to the Taxpayer Advocate. Verify online if your letter allows it. An Identity Protection PIN can help prevent the next freeze, and our article on student loan identity theft covers the credit side.
Why Did The IRS Tell Me To Wait 6 Or 9 Weeks?
The two numbers come from two different situations. Six weeks is the standard answer when a representative finds a return received but not processed, with no letter pending and no review flag. The representative documents the call on an internal form and tells you to wait up to 6 weeks. Nine weeks is the timeline after identity verification, so you’ll only hear it if your return was flagged. Neither wait applies if your return is moving normally, which our refund schedule can help you judge.
When Should You Call The IRS About Your Refund?
Call after 21 days for an e-filed return, after 6 weeks for a paper return, or when Where’s My Refund tells you to call. Before that, representatives see the same status you do. Getting through takes patience. Assistors answered about 21% of filing season calls in 2026, the Taxpayer Advocate found. Check our list of tax return delays before you dial, since it may answer the question.

When Can The Taxpayer Advocate Service Help?
The Taxpayer Advocate Service can take your case when a problem has gone more than 30 days past normal processing, when the IRS missed a promised response date, or when the delay causes a financial hardship. Request help with Form 911 or by calling 877-777-4778. Include the date you filed, every call you made and why the delay hurts. Families stuck waiting on a refund should also avoid costly stopgaps, which our tax refund advance loan comparison breaks down.
What If Your Refund Was Sent But Never Arrived?
With direct deposit, wait 5 days after the sent date, then call your bank and ask whether a deposit was rejected or is pending. For a mailed check, wait 28 days from the mailing date before filing an online claim through Where’s My Refund, according to the IRS. Married couples filing jointly need Form 3911 to start a trace. With paper checks now rare, most missing refunds will be deposit problems. When you pick an account for next year, use one in your own name, like the top high-yield savings accounts on our list.
The IRS can’t change direct deposit details once a return is accepted. If you typed a wrong account number and the bank rejects the deposit, the refund comes back to the IRS and you’ll likely get a CP53E notice. Money that landed in someone else’s account is a different problem, so contact that bank and the IRS right away. Our tax center tracks any changes to these rules.
How Do You Track An Amended Return Refund?
Use Where’s My Amended Return, not Where’s My Refund. Status shows about 3 weeks after you file Form 1040-X, and you’ll need your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code. Processing currently takes more than 20 weeks for both paper and electronic amended returns, according to IRS Tax Topic 308. Signed-in users can also check amended return status in the IRS app, and our tax software rankings note which programs e-file a 1040-X.
How Can You Get Your 2027 Refund Faster?
E-file, choose direct deposit into an account in your own name, and double-check the routing and account numbers. Those three steps avoid the paper delays and CP53E freezes that slowed millions of refunds in 2026. File an accurate return the first time, since mismatched income and credit errors trigger reviews. Our picks for free tax software all support e-file and direct deposit.
Get an Identity Protection PIN before you file if you’ve had a verification letter before. It blocks anyone else from filing with your Social Security number. If you claim the EITC or ACTC, plan around the mid-February hold instead of a refund advance with fees. Our list of accounts with early direct deposit can shave a day or two off the wait once the IRS releases the money.

The fastest refund starts with an accurate e-filed return. Compare prices and free tiers in our ranking of the best tax software, or see the current TurboTax offer if you prefer guided filing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Often Does Where’s My Refund Update?
Once a day, usually overnight. Checking more than once a day won’t show anything new. The IRS app and your online account pull from the same data.
Can I Change My Bank Account After My Refund Is Approved?
No. The IRS can’t change direct deposit information after it accepts your return. The only exception is a CP53E notice, which lets you add or update a bank account once, or request a paper check waiver, through your IRS online account.
Does Tax Topic 152 Mean My Refund Is Delayed?
No. Tax Topic 152 is general refund information that millions of filers see. It doesn’t mean your return is under review or that you need to do anything.
Will The IRS Still Mail A Paper Refund Check In 2027?
Only if you take action or qualify for an exception. A return without bank information gets frozen and a CP53E notice. You can request a paper check waiver in your IRS online account or by calling 800-829-1040, which took about four weeks in 2026. If you don’t respond at all, the IRS says it mails a check after 6 weeks.
Can Student Loans Take My 2027 Tax Refund?
Only defaulted federal student loans can, and those offsets were paused as of late October 2026. The Education Department hasn’t announced a restart date. Borrowers get about 65 days’ notice before an offset.
Is Where’s My Refund The Same As The IRS App?
The IRS app shows the same refund status as Where’s My Refund on IRS.gov. It replaced IRS2Go in September 2026, and you can still check refund status without signing in.
